"The train moved slowly through the African night. I lay on my couchette savoring the strange tropical smells that came through the open carriage window. On the bunk below Don Frey leafed through a notebook checking off details of our progress so far.

Tomorrow we would be in Mombasa and work would begin in earnest. We had a fortnight in which to learn everything we could about a ship that was said to have sunk below a reef in the late 17th century. Before we had left our base in Turkey, George Bass had briefed us, "Hamo tells me that there is a site 60 feet down in the murky waters of Mombasa Harbor. He needs help with a survey and advice on the practicalities of an excavation. I can't tell you how big the area is, what can be seen, or indeed if there is anything there." And so in 1976 began an odyssey that has lasted intermittently for near 30 years." - Robin Piercy
